According to WebMD and my co-intern Jeff (who told me that "just the thought of you coming into the office made me Purell my hands"), I may have strep throat. Symptoms include: painfully sore throat, slight fever, exhaustion, chills, heats. Last night I went to bed at 8pm, woke up this morning at 9:30am, and knew I wasn't going to get any farther out of bed than was required to let the dog out. I'm sorry to be pointing fingers, but I'm relatively certain that this is my friend Sofia's fault. She came to visit last week and was complaining of a sore throat. (Not that I'm not happy she came. I'm VERY happy she came. I just wish she had left all her bacteria back in in New Mexico.)
Right now my main sources of joy in life are a copy of The Hours on DVD (never seen it), and my copy of Jonathan Franzen's The Corrections, the most brilliant contemporary novel I've read in I don't know how long. I have about 200 pages left, and I'm taking 'em slow. And, finally, this email response from a CPC staff member (and Executive Editor at the Oxford University Press), whom I wrote after applying for a marketing position at OUP:
Dear Hana,
Of course I remember you! Thanks for letting me know you're applying for the job at OUP. I didn't even know we were approved to do any hires yet. I did better than send this to HR. I sent it to the marketing manager who is doing the hiring.
Good luck,
Susan
Ivy League connections are the best. (But please don't say anything remotely congratulatory until I know if it leads anywhere.)
