Rejection

Today the gays lost their bid for marriage equality in California. And I lost my bid for the position of Foreign Rights Assistant at a small NYC-based literary agency. At least Obama and the chickens came out winners. I'm sorry to be posting this in the midst of all the Obama euphoria but today I feel like crap.

Dear Hana,

I know you've been anxious for an answer and I'm sorry to tell you that I offered the job to another individual earlier today, who has accepted. You were an exceptional candidate: you wrote a spot-on reader's report and I'm sure you would do an excellent job here as my assistant. This decision was a very difficult one for me to make - we had so many qualified applicants and you were at the top of the list - in the end I decided to go with someone who has solid office experience within the publishing world. Once again, it was a real pleasure meeting you and I'm certain you'll excel at whatever job you choose.

Best wishes,

Jenny

Hi Hana.

Thanks for taking the test. Although your educational and creative work is impressive, I'm sorry to say that your test score wasn't quite what we're looking for. Again, thanks for applying and good luck in your job search.

Best regards,

Andrew

Hi Hana,

I received your resume in response to an ad we posted for a Library Marketing Assistant in our Children’s Division. We are in the final stages of interviewing for this position and are not accepting any additional resumes at them moment.

Thank you,

Linda

Dear Hana,

Thank you for coming in to discuss the Assistant position with Leonard and me. I enjoyed speaking with you and was impressed with your background, but have ultimately decided that someone else was best-qualified for the position.

Take care and we wish you the best of luck in New York.

Sincerely,
Cecily

Oh Hana,

I'm so sorry not to have gotten back to you. Lots of reasons but no good excuse.

Your interview was very strong and I'm sure you would make a strong addition to the institute. But in the end we decided to hire only two people from the Columbia course (and one of the current interns).

Best of luck to you finding a job. Please feel encouraged to keep in touch about future opportunities or if you want some advice about other jobs.

regards

Bob
