Bridegroom

Collective sigh of relief: the magazine workshop is much more fun than the book workshop. It began on Sunday and ends on Friday, so it's a little shorter than the book workshop. I also like my new group better. Maybe it's because everyone has chilled out since last week, I don't know. There's only guy in my magazine group who was also in my book group; he's the one who tried to usurp my Brain cover last time. Now he's our Art Director.

Karmic retribution?

(No, really, I have nothing against him. He's nice.)

I wanted to be an editor this time, but so did everyone else. I was voted down three consecutive times for the three editorial positions. I was left to choose between Advertising Director and Business Manager, the jobs no one wanted. So now I'm Business Manager. There's not much to it... I just have to enter numbers into a spreadsheet. The rest of the time I sit around and listen to music and write emails. I've helped out a lot with editorial stuff, too.

I like my group, even though they shunted me into the least desirable position. Our magazine is just so great. It's a wedding magazine for gay men called Bridegroom. Our mission statement begins, "Bridegroom is the affianced homosexual’s best friend..." I wish it was a real magazine, even though it's not my goal to work for the wealthy gay male demographic. But all the CPC staff keep telling us we're their favorite magazine apart from Knockout, the sports mag for teen girls.

Last night we went out to buy oreos and beer and then stayed up late brainstorming puns for the article titles:

Don't Have a Vow, Man: Ten easy steps to writing your own vows
No Two Men Are an Island: The top ten honeymoon island retreats
Kinks for DINKs: Toys to spice up your sex life

There's also an advice column by Carson Kressley from Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. We spent at least half an hour trying to come up with a name for it. Rejected ideas include: "Ask Carson," "Dear Queer," "Wedding Queeries," and "Dear Dr. Queerlove..."

I can't believe we're already four 1/2 weeks in. Most of the students are already stressing out about finding housing and jobs for August; luckily I have a little more time to figure things out.

Also: Last week I went to a cocktail party at Conde Nast in Times Square, which was a lot of fun. A friend of mine actually got a job interview out of it, but the only person I schmoozed with was a chatty cocktail waiter who told me he's trying to make it as an actor in New York. I took a tour of the Conde Nast cafeteria, designed by Frank Gehry. It was like a college dining hall, but nicer, and the tour guides were gushing about everything, "and when you're done eating, you put your tray on this rotating thing and someone on the other side takes it off and cleans it! You never see it happening!"
